One of Vancouver’s exciting choral arts ensembles, LAUDATE SINGERS, is holding auditions for the 2021-2022 season. We are seeking singers for all sections.

In general, all singers are expected to demonstrate the following:

1. A high level of musicianship, including reading and aural skills, knowledge of languages, musical styles and diction.

2. Formal training is not necessary; however, a significant history of choral singing is required. Singers may be asked to pursue formal training to develop their vocal technique; this may be as a co-requisite upon joining the choir (with a probationary period) or as a pre-requisite for re-auditioning later.

3. The ability to blend with other voices; the ability to hear and adjust pitch, diction and tonal quality when requested.

4. Professional demeanour, consistent attendance, punctuality, attentiveness in rehearsals, willingness to prepare music for rehearsals, desire to work in a congenial manner with other singers, a positive/constructive attitude.

5. Principal singers are expected to provide leadership within their sections; an advanced level of technical vocal skill is necessary for these positions.

 

Applicants should be advanced choral singers with good vocal technique and extensive experience in a variety of styles and languages.

Audition requirements: four songs of contrasting style (preferably not jazz or pop); at least three different languages must be represented, including German, Italian, Latin, French and English. One selection should be from the Baroque period displaying ability to sing coloratura passages.

Honorarium – $100-$200 per concert

DesignTO Symposium
‘No Such Thing as Normal’

What is the new “normal” when there is no such thing as “normal”? In a post-pandemic world, how can we design to meet diverse needs?

With over 7 billion people on earth, there are many different kinds of human beings in the world, each unique. As designer Kat Holmes describes in her book Mismatch, “[design] solutions need to work across a wide range of human diversity. But that’s easier said than done. People can be highly unpredictable. How do we design for so much complexity?”

As discussed at last year’s DesignTO Symposium ‘Towards Inclusive Design’, all design can and should be inclusive. Through participatory design, we can actively involve stakeholders and users throughout the design process to ensure the results meet their diverse needs. By decolonizing design, we can make space for unrepresented voices, truly value diverse perspectives and experiences, and design beyond only human needs.

Designing for an ideal is no longer a desirable outcome. Rather, this approach has proven harmful, contributing to systems of oppression that are intolerant of diversity, including race, culture, disability, gender, and sexual orientation. For many people, not feeling “normal” can be both a point of pride and a source of anguish. Canada’s forcible assimilation of Indigenous peoples is exemplary of the violence that “normal” can inflict.

This symposium invites designers and thinkers to explore how we can dismantle the long-accepted idea of “normal,” in order to design for diversity. How can we create great designs for both the individual and the masses? How can we present human-led solutions that move beyond the oversimplified average by designing “with, not for”? What tools can we use to build “one-size-fits-one” solutions rather than “one-size-fits-all”? What have we learned during the pandemic about systemic inequality? Has the pandemic created or revealed opportunities for change? How do we design a post-pandemic world that, to quote author and activist Sonya Renee Taylor, “fits all of humanity and nature”?

How much does it cost to submit?

There is no fee for this submission. All successful applicants are required to cover their own transportation to and accommodations in Toronto for the Symposium date. A modest speaker’s fee will be paid to successful applicants.

When and where is the Symposium?

The Symposium runs during the DesignTO Festival, January 21-30, 2022. The dates for the Symposium are Tuesday, January 25 and Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 6-8pm. Due to COVID, this event is to be held virtually. We reserve the right to modify dates, times or delivery methods if required.

Context

2020 surfaced many challenges in our society that have called for systemic change. In hand with the pandemic, these systemic issues (of racism, inequity, climate crisis, polarization, displacement, mental wellness, food and housing insecurity, and violence) have become more apparent and more urgent.

Being apart from one another has highlighted our interdependence and connectedness. As communities begin to optimistically strategize what post-pandemic life could be after more than a year of living 6 feet apart, we ask designers to reconsider, reframe and remake what’s around us to have a positive and long-lasting impact on society. ‘6ft (a)part’ calls for a new spatial contract that will reshape our everyday life.

6 feet is as much a spatial definition as a social and political notion of an invisible boundary within society. This distance between individuals has always been there. But the fact that it is now quantified behooves us to address its conditions and consequences. As much as it is a quantitative measure of distance, it is also a qualitative measure of our immediate environment. It dictates how we are to be in relation with others.

How will you shape 6 feet from within and beyond its boundary?

Brief

Design is fundamentally projective and generative. The design process leads us to observe, question and propose alternative realities, positing ideas that, with purpose, can confront the status quo and inspire change or resilience.

This residency invites designers to propose ideas that can meaningfully impact their communities, through investigation, speculation and production. These ideas can be small or large, intimate or urban, digital or analog. They can stem from ongoing research or a new line of inquiry.

How can reframing the space between us address social inequities? What political and social impact can be made through the generative process of design? How can the shared and inherent hopefulness of design and activism be manifested into real change for the better? How can design help us envision new systems of relations? What part do we play in these possible futures?

Residency Details

The residency will take place from mid-October 2021 to mid-January 2022, culminating in a public presentation as part of the 2022 DesignTO Festival (January 21-30, 2022). Residents will come together online, meeting every 3 weeks with their cohort of 3 designers and representatives of FLDWRK and DesignTO. In between meetings, residents will be working independently on their proposed projects. Residents will participate in the program remotely, providing their own computer and internet access.

All submissions must include the following:

  • A description of your proposed residency project as it connects to the context and brief (max. 500 words);
  • A description of the format of your proposed public presentation (e.g. research paper, online article, public presentation/talk, installation, website, podcast, photo series, drawing set) (max. 250 words);
  • A short bio on you and/or your creative practice (max. 150 words);
  • 3-5 visuals of your work (max. 1MB per image)
  • Up to 2 links to a video or websites; and
  • Your contact info (name, email, phone number, mailing address), a CV, and website URL.

All applications are due Friday, September 24, 2021 by 11:59pm EDT.

How much does it cost to apply?

There is no fee to apply. A residency stipend of $1,500 CAD will be paid to successful applicants. A production allowance will be available to successful applicants.

Prototype Exhibition
‘Purpose & Play’

Going into its seventh year, ‘Purpose & Play’ is a new edition of the annual prototype exhibition organized by DesignTO in partnership with Umbra. A dozen new prototypes by Canadian designers are shown each year at the Umbra Store during the DesignTO Festival. ‘Purpose & Play’ invites any Canadian designer (living here or abroad) to submit to this open call for submissions.

About the exhibition

Showcasing the work of Canadian designers, ‘Purpose & Play’ is an exhibition that explores fresh and original housewares and working products for contemporary life. Previous editions were ‘Work/Life’ and ‘Compact Living’.

‘Purpose & Play’ will run during the annual city-wide DesignTO Festival, January 21-30, 2022. All selected prototypes will also be considered for addition to Umbra’s growing roster of quality products, to be manufactured, distributed, and sold through the Umbra brand, with royalty. For example, The Bolo Planter by Simone Ferkul, a prototype from the 2017 exhibition, is now produced by Umbra and available for purchase globally.

Call for submissions

The past year has been hard. The effects of the ongoing global pandemic have been felt in almost every aspect of life, with serious illness and loss of life threatening communities, social isolation and stress damaging mental health, and restrictions jeopardizing livelihoods.

Throughout this year, we have been asked to stay at home as much as possible. Many activities previously spread across different locations and environments — live, work, play, learn, socialize — are confined to one space. The monotony of lockdown is contributing to brain fog and boredom.

In a time when everything can feel the same, how can we inject colour and levity into our lives? Where can we find moments of joy and spontaneity? How can we experience our environments anew after so much time in confinement? In contrast to restrictions, essentials, and necessity, how can we carve out opportunities for frivolity and play?

Drawing upon these conditions, the exhibition invites designers to explore new designs for the coming year. How can we create a “new quality of life” through prototypes? Consider opportunities for joy, humour, play, multiple functions, adaptability, personalization, entertaining, and other ways domestic objects can be fun to use and fun to own. The exhibition invites designers to think about the whole environment that we live and work in, and welcomes creative responses to the theme.

Design considerations

  • An understanding of Umbra’s core values: modern, original, casual, functional, and affordable
  • Opportunities for joy, humour, play, multiple functions, adaptability, personalization, entertaining, and other ways domestic objects can be fun to use and fun to own. (See Umbra’s Strumba Kalimba as one example.)
  • Anticipate or integrate technological developments
  • A product that can be used in multiple contexts
  • A product with a long lifeline
  • A product that you want, and that you can afford
  • Aesthetics, functionality, manufacturability
  • Global appeal

Submissions of new work are preferred and strongly encouraged; however, we will consider submissions of work that have not been publicly displayed before. Applicants can submit more than one entry using one submission per form.

All submissions must include the following:

  • A description of the product (max. 150 words) — please be sure to include the following details: title, function, materials, dimensions;
  • A short bio on you and/or your creative practice (max. 150 words);
  • 2-3 images of the prototype, such as a digital rendering, drawing, or sketch (max. 1MB per image);
  • Your contact info (name, email, phone number, mailing address), and website URL and/or social media handles (if available);
  • Signed copy of Umbra’s Design Submission Agreement (in PDF format).

All submissions are due Friday, September 24, 2021 by 11:59pm EDT.

How much does it cost?

There is no fee for this submission or for participating in the Prototype Exhibition. However, if selected, you will be responsible for arranging drop-off and pick-up of your prototype to the Umbra Store, 165 John Street, Toronto, at your own cost. Artist fees will be paid to designers selected for the exhibition.

When does the prototype need to be done?

The prototype does not need to be made when submitting to the call. Designers who are selected will be required to produce a prototype of their submitted design and ship the prototype to Toronto by January 3, 2022 latest. Additional details will be sent to successful applicants.

Who can apply?

All Canadian designers can apply. This includes Canadians living abroad, and anyone currently living in Canada. Students can apply as well.

When and where is the exhibition?

Group Exhibition
‘Shared Terrain’

‘Shared Terrain’ is a group exhibition that will be presented as part of ‘Nordic Bridges’, a year-long initiative led by Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre fostering cultural exchange between the Nordic Region and Canada.

This exhibition seeks to explore collaboration between Canadian and Nordic artists and designers. It is structured around an exchange and conversation between creative thinkers from distant locations. Five selected Canadian artists will be paired with one of five Nordic artists. An introduction will be made. Over three months this fall, the pairs will collaborate remotely on a collaborative work piece generated through conversations between them.

Collaboration allows for further investigation into one’s personal practice while learning about another individual approach to creative thinking and making. The process will provide an inventive space to create and ask various questions. How can similarities and differences build a connection between the pairs? How can each artist benefit from this cross cultural exchange? What relationship can be formed through these dialogues between creators? How can they inspire one another? What can one discover about their own practice through engagement with different perspectives?

Artists are invited to explore ties between their creative practices in many ways, but also with respect to their geographical locations and cultural histories. Canada and Nordic countries share similar qualities that may reveal connections among artistic approaches. While the Nordic regions may greatly vary from each other, some commonalities to Canada are: Indigenous knowledge, sovereignty and land rights; interest in sustainability and the preservation of natural landscapes; relationships with materials available in the regions; and range of experiences found in urban and rural environments.

Artists will be invited to explore these ideas through a series of online engagements. The outcome of this collaborative process is a collaborative work which will be exhibited during the 2022 DesignTO Festival. This may take the form of a conversation, a physical work, or an alternate approach that responds to the experience of sharing.

Call for submissions

We invite submissions from artists and designers working in all mediums and formats. Artists or designers working in long-term collaborative pairs may apply as a collective.

The exhibition will be featured as part of the DesignTO Festival, January 21-30, 2022, and co-presented with Harbourfront Centre.

All submissions must include the following:

  • Bio on you and/or your creative practice (max. 100 words);
  • Artist statement (max. 150 words);
  • Description of why you want to participate in this collaborative project (max. 150 words);
  • Description of your previous experience with working collaboratively (max. 150 words);

The DesignTO Festival brings people together to celebrate contemporary design across the city January 21-30, 2022.

DesignTO Festival is Canada’s leading (and largest) annual design festival that celebrates design as a multidisciplinary form of creative thinking and making, with over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week each January. Since 2011, we have welcomed over 600,000 visitors, worked with over 5,000 artists and designers, and reached over 475 million users through print and digital media.

Independently-produced projects are integral to the Festival’s structure. We welcome all who want to present, discuss, demonstrate, or exhibit design in any field and/or related disciplines.

Exhibitors include artists, designers, design firms, local businesses, academic and cultural institutions, and students. Exhibitors are responsible for arranging their own venue in Toronto, including spaces such as galleries, studios, workshops, cafés, schools, lobbies, and businesses. We also welcome online events and exhibitions.

Your project listing includes:

  • A listing on the online Festival Schedule (one page with up to 6 images, 300-word description, and associated reception or other events)
  • A listing on the Festival mobile app (one page with up to 6 images, 40-word description, and associated reception or other events)
  • Inclusion in one ‘What to do’ daily e-newsletter
  • DesignTO venue signage (e.g. Festival window cling, not project-specific)

Definitions

  • A window installation runs the whole duration of Festival Week, and is visible to the public 24 hours a day from the outside of your venue. Depending on the space, the installation may also be viewable from inside your venue during regular business/gallery hours.
  • An event runs one day during Festival Week, for a set period of time, taking place online or in-person. For example, a talk, tour, product launch, webinar, film screening, party, or workshop.
  • An exhibition runs more than one day during Festival Week, and can take place in-person or online. It is open to the public during regular business/gallery hours, and may include a window component. It can start before Festival Week, and end after Festival Week. It may also include an opening or closing reception, artist/designer’s talk, or tour.

This annual juried exhibition, open to both members and non-members of Leighton Art Centre, with a nominal per-piece submission fee, honours the practice of creating art outdoors, in the moment.

Leighton Art Centre’s 2021 ‘In The Open Air’ juried plein air exhibition will be held September 11 – October 24, 2021. The exhibition format(s) will depend on the current state of health regulations at that time but, as of now, is anticipated to be held in person, with an online catalogue and online sales (within Canada) also available.

Important Dates:

  • August 16, 2021 (4 pm MDT): Deadline to submit.
  • August 20, 2021: All artists will be informed by end of day about the status of their submission.
  • September 4, 2021: Final day to deliver accepted pieces to Leighton Art Centre. Centre closes at 4 pm.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Open call: submitting artist is not required to be a Leighton Art Centre member.
  • Pieces must have been created en plein air. Touch ups in studio perfectly fine, but the spirit of the genre is for the bulk of the work to be done outdoors, in the moment. Please do not submit pieces created from photos or entirely in studio.
  • Maximum 6 pieces per artist. All submitted pieces must be for sale, with the price selected by the artist.
  • There is no size limit for submitted pieces, but please realize that the exhibition will be curated with available gallery space in mind.
  • Accepted pieces must arrive at Leighton Art Centre ready to hang (or be placed on a table or plinth in the case of fine craft such as ceramics, textiles, jewellery or sculpture). No sawtooth hangers.
  • Please check all your artwork information carefully before submitting. We are dealing with large quantities of data and will have very limited capacity to fix any errors. No art substitutions, or title or price changes will be accepted after the fact.
  • Any submitted piece may not be sold by the artist between the time of submission of this form and the date that either (a) the artist receives notice of said piece’s rejection or (b) the exhibition ends (October 24, 2021). Failure to abide by this rule will result in the artist being excluded from the exhibition.

“With Every Fibre of My Being” is an exhibit intended to explore the of use fibrous materials to express your passions and deeply felt emotions.

“With Every Fibre of My Being” is often a metaphor for your whole being, character, inner psychological and physical strength and could be a reference to your moral fibre, or to the fibrous and connective tissues you are made of. To feel something with every fibre of your being, is to feel it deeply. Itspeaksto passion, desire, and to putting all of one’s effort into something. Artists often feel this strong connection to their art while for others it relates to the resiliency needed to navigate various experiences or for the love they have for someone or something.

The Vernon Community Arts Centre invites you to examine your own connection to this phrase and express that through your artwork. Artists are encouraged to use textiles and fibrous materials (such as paper, wool, silk, bark, straw, bamboo, hemp, papyrus, copper, basalt, etc.)

This is not a juried exhibit and you are not required to apply in advance. The Arts Centre showcases works of both emerging and established artists as long the art fits the theme and follows the prescribed guidelines in the Artist Entry Form. Please read the Artist Entry Form for full submission details and guidelines and drop off your work(s) at the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.

Gallery Vertigo is operated under the auspices of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative, a non-profit society and registered charity. The gallery is artist run and represents a sampling of emerging and midstream artists who exhibit, create, and manage the operation of the gallery, share studio space and coordinate community programs. Artists have a commitment to contemporary art that is critically challenging and experimental within an interdisciplinary group of writers, musicians, and visual artists. Members have an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work and to show support to other artists and their community.

Our Mandate and Vision is to provide:

  • Opportunities for the research, discussion, exhibition and production of contemporary work;
  • Opportunities for affordable art education to the entire community in the form of lectures, artist talks, workshops, readings and demonstrations;
  • An organization which supports the endeavours of emerging artists;
  • Similar or related services as determined by the membership.

Required Submission Criteria

  • Artwork may include work in any media, solo, group, or touring shows.
  • All work must be original to the artist[s].
  • Proposals are selected based on quality, artistic innovation and intent, professionalism, educational value, nature of the work, and spatial requirements.
  • Proposals for the 2022 exhibition year will be accepted to October 30, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.

Your submission MUST include

  • Cover Letter: addressed to Gallery Vertigo; Exhibitions, PO Box 1775, Vernon, BC V1T 8C3, introducing yourself, your scope of work and relevant contact information Curriculum Vitae: [2 pages MAX] including education, exhibition history, teaching or other experience related to your art, scholarships and awards. This should include your mailing address, phone number and email address. If self-taught, state this and include info of any related courses taken.
  • Artist Statement: [300 words MAX] describing the focus of your recent work and the work you are proposing to exhibit.
  • Exhibition Description: Please provide a comprehensive description [500 words MAX]
  • Exhibition Images: Provide [15] JPEG exhibition images each including: name, title, media, size, value, and year completed. Images must be clearly marked and have an accompanying detailed description labelled accordingly to match each JPEG image. DO NOT send original works of art. JPEG files will be accepted on USB FLASH DRIVES ONLY. Group show submissions must include sufficient images from each participating artist.

NOTE: Proposal submissions that do not fulfil the required submission criteria will be rejected.

Selection Criteria

Gallery Vertigo Board of Directors will select work for exhibition based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the written submission and artistic merit
  • Innovation and experimentation, educational and professional intent
  • Compatibility with the mandate/vision of Gallery Vertigo, and of value to the City of Vernon and Okanagan region
  • A focus on emerging and mid-career artists engaged in traditional and contemporary art projects that range across disciplines and media

Submissions

Are reviewed November 15 for exhibitions taking place in the next calendar year. Only those artists whose proposals are successful for exhibition will be contacted by December 15. We sincerely thank all others who submitted proposals and encourage you to please submit proposals in the future.

Proposals may be presented in person at Gallery Vertigo, or alternatively mailed – Attention: Gallery Coordinator. Proposals are NOT accepted by e-mail. Proposals are NOT acknowledged upon receipt.

Self-Addressed/postage-paid return envelope

If you would like your submission package returned to you, please provide a self-addressed/postage-paid return envelope; otherwise, your submission package will be destroyed by Gallery Vertigo.

Exhibition Cost

The Artist[s] is responsible for all costs for the exhibition unless otherwise approved in writing by Gallery Vertigo. Artist[s] who require assistance with production expenses should include a detailed breakdown of materials and cost. Currently Gallery Vertigo is not eligible for CAR/FAC fees, although in special circumstances, we may be able to help financially.

Artist’s Opening Reception

Artist[s] must be in attendance and provide informative and interesting opening remarks and be available for any inquiries during the reception. Sale of Work: Gallery Vertigo is a non-profit charitable organization. Any artwork sold during an exhibition will facilitate a 30% commission collected by the gallery.
