Realwheels Theatre and its new Artistic Director, Tomas Mureika, are eager to meet theatre industry professionals – including emerging artists and recent grads – from all disciplines throughout the lower mainland who self-identify as living with disability.
Realwheels is interested in creating professional world class art that stands up against or exceeds that of any other theatre company. While we are asking for artists who identify with disability, we are interested in crafting integrated productions that reflect the reality of the world around us – both on- and back-stage. With 25% of Canadians currently identifying as living with a disability and that number only poised to grow, we wish to make barrier-breaking productions that represent this population – and stage a wide variety of shows where disability need not necessarily be the driving conflict of the story, but rather forms the landscape on which universal themes are debated on stage.
We are also interested in creating unique multi-media audience experiences, incorporating cutting-edge digital and streaming technology alongside inventive stagecraft – all supporting the human element and the power of the written word. Our goal is to create entertaining and excitingly new productions that leave audiences thinking and discussing long after the house lights have gone up.
HOW TO APPLY:
While all emails and submissions will be carefully reviewed and considered, follow-up meetings will be determined on a project-by-project basis. Submissions can be sent to applications@realwheels.ca by August 15th, 2021. If you are unable to email us due to access needs, please call us at 604-322-7325 to make alternative arrangements.
Please note: We are flexible on all details below and are happy to address any access needs you may have. Please let us know if you would like to submit or connect in an alternative way.
Notes for all submissions:
-
We would be grateful if all submissions included information on your disability and/or accessibility needs so we can understand how to best support you. Realwheels understands that – due to the systemic ableism in the theatre industry – you may not want these details known widely at this time and we will absolutely respect these boundaries.
-
Should you wish to do so, you are also invited to identify if you belong to any other equity-seeking group(s); Realwheels strives to be a diverse and inclusionary company representing the intersectional identities we each embrace.
