Studio 180 Theatre invites submissions for our RBC Emerging Playwrights program. Selected applicants will receive a $2000 fee and a place in our Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT programming in the fall of 2021.

APPLY FOR THE RBC EMERGING PLAYWRIGHTS PROGRAM

Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT gives Canadian theatre creators a helping hand as they develop new works exploring provocative social and political issues. We provide creators with the time, space, and resources required to bring burgeoning ideas to the stage. For our 2021 iteration of the program we will continue to work in a digital format, providing rehearsal time, performers and directorial and dramaturgical support as well as a digital presentation and facilitated audience discussion.

Studio 180 is committed to supporting the work of artists that represent the diverse communities we serve and strongly encourages submissions from BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, and individuals from other equity seeking groups.

Successful applicants will receive a digital presentation of their work in progress in October of 2021 and must be available for a minimum of three half day workshops to be scheduled between September 1 and October 15. Consideration will be given to works at all stages of development and need not have a completed first draft. Presentations can range from a full reading to a discussion of the piece and a sharing of scenes from the work-in-progress. The goal is to serve the development of the piece. In all cases, Studio 180 will work with the writer to find the appropriate dramaturgical and directorial team to support the work.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • a cover letter which introduces yourself and the project and articulates your goals for the next stage of development. If applicable, please list any collaborators you would like to include in the work (maximum 2 pages)
  • a sample from the work in development you are submitting for (maximum 10 pages)

The deadline for submissions is midnight, July 23 and decisions regarding programming will be made by August 6.

Any questions regarding the application or our Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT program can be directed to Mark McGrinder.
